Wood down the centuries Sussex woodlands provided the charcoal for the iron industries of the Middle Ages. Wood is a durable building material but subject to fire - and replacement as styles of construction evolved. Many noble properties in Sussex retain their distinctive wooden features: Bodiam Castle is fortunate to have a rare original wooden portcullis studded with iron spikes. Alfriston Clergy House is a 14th century timber-framed Wealden ‘hall house’. It became the first property of the newly founded National Trust in 1896. Parham Park is a glorious Elizabethan house with one of the richest parks in the county. The little church of St Peter lies in the grounds and contains box pews and z two-decker pulpit. Eastwards again, West Hoathly Church has an immense oak chest hollowed out from a tree. The Priest’s House is 14th century and probably belonged to the monks of Lewes Priory. It was given to Anne of Cleves as part of her dowry. It survives, as she did her brief marriage, and has been kept in fine condition - a monument to the enduring quality of oak. |

12 Steps to Refinishing Hardwood Floors
Refinishing hardwood floors is no easy task. It will take time and patience, but it can be totally worth it when you see the finished product. Here we run through the steps to refinishing a hardwood floor properly.
1. Empty the room
When refinishing rooms you need to completely empty the room. Shifting furniture around as you work is not an option, so get everything out.
2. Remove the shoe moulding
Label the shoe moulding with painter’s tape and then remove it. Labelling it will help you to put it all back in the correct place later.
3. Remove staples
Remove all staples and carpet fasteners. These will tear the sandpaper if you leave any in.
4. Sand with 30-40 grit
Begin sanding with 30-40 grit paper. Sand with the grain and sand a complete row in one go. Once the row is complete, pull the sander back and complete another row ensuring there is a small overlap between them.
5. Sand the edges
For the room’s edges, you will need to use a power hand sander and a detail sander loaded with 30-40 grit sandpaper.
6. Examine and fill
After the first pass with each sander, examine the floor and use wood filler to fill in any imperfections.
7. Repeat with finer grits
Repeat the sanding process with finer grits. Firstly you should go over it with 50-60 grit paper. Then finish it with a finer 80-100 grit sandpaper.
8. Vacuum
Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to collect all of the dust once complete. The brush attachment will stop you from damaging the floor.
9. Wipe the floor
Wipe the floor with mineral spirits. Mineral spirits will clean the floor of dust and bring out the colour of the wood.
10. Stain the floor
If you wish to change the colour of the floor then this is the time to do so. Choose your stain and apply evenly over the floor with a brush.
11. Seal and sand
Start at the edges and work your way to the centre of the room with the applicator. Work slowly so you don’t create bubbles in the polyurethane. Once it has dried, make a final pass with the sander using very fine 320-grit sandpaper.
12. Replace the shoes and refurnish
Replace the floor shoes, refurnish the room and enjoy your newly refinished wood floor.
